Back to the Basics- Where Do You Stand?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8x-NByi3qY&feature=relmfu

1800 Tequila is owned by the Beckmann Family who also owns the Jose Cuervo brand. 1800 Tequila is a brand of Tequila and it is made by 100% blue agave. 1800 Tequila is a special type of tequila brand that honors the traditions and the spirit of tequila, so it was named after 1800, the year tequila was first sold. In 2004, 1800 Tequila first created three labels which were Anejo, Reposado, and Silver. Then in 2005, Ultimate margarita was released which was the only ready to serve margarita. In 2008, 1800 Tequila launched Select Silver which was one of the rare 100 proof tequilas. 1800 Tequila is also known for beautiful designs and amazing bottles which are made by various artists. 1800 Tequila has developed a great reputation and receives a lot of love from consumers. The quality and enriched flavor make 1800 Tequila outstanding and one of the greatest brands, despite being relatively new.
1800 tequila tends to use a more simplistic approach with their advertising techniques. The above commercial is very similar to most of their other commercials. The commercials tend to last a short 18-30 seconds and probably have a very minimal budget, but they get the same message across in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost as compared to commercials produced by many other alcoholic beverage companies. They get the idea across to the viewer that their product is better than the competitor’s product.
Commercials in today’s society tend to be driven by huge budgets and an attempt to make the consumer believe that their life will drastically improve with the use of the company’s product. Companies continue to get further away from the true purpose of advertising, getting the company name out there. Although most popular commercials are funny and draw the attention of the viewer, many viewers are never even aware of what is being advertised. This short commercial by 1800 tequila calls out this problem in their commercial, thus, making the viewer aware of the issue.
Throughout the commercial, 1800 Tequila displays their product in plain sight, while the narrator talks about the product the entire time without any flashy stunts in the commercial. Isn’t this the true purpose of advertising? Or does advertising in today’s culture need to have all of the flashy extras to draw people’s attention? Ultimately, all people have their  own opinion based on their own personal tastes as to which type of commercial is more effective.
As discussed in the previous week’s blog, most people related to more of a comedic commercial, however, there were still some people who believed the political and straightforward commercial was a better marketing technique. Now, the question is whether you believe the simplistic type of advertising used by 1800 tequila makes more sense economically and marketing wise or if the flashy, expensive commercial is a more effective approach.

  1. Yes, yes, and yes. This commercial is what a commercial trully should be, not all flash and pizzaz, but right out there with what the product is. The way they state the commercial wasn't all fancy and that it was what it was, was genious. This type of commercial is much more effective, it costs much less, still gets your attention, and gets your product across much clearer.

  2. I definitely liked how the product was at the beginning and straight forward rather than going through the entire commercial wondering what the point of the commercial is supposed to be. This company does seem to know what they are doing. They are also taking a more adult approach to the commercial as if the viewer should take the commercial seriously. This advertisement also has a masculine theme to it that comes out in the way the tequila is presented so seriously. I would also like to note how the commercial attempts to subtly incorporate the “drink responsibly” warning so that is does not distract from the advertisement. Also, the great points were mentioned before about costing less and accomplishing the same thing are important as well.

  3. I also like how the commercial was straight forward and I liked how they used dark colors around the bottle which made the bottle stand out more and draw your attention to it. It works well from a marketing standpoint because if you can spend less but have more people pay attention then you can consider it a good investment. They show that there is no need for flashy commercials to sell a product.

  4. The commercial displays simplicity at its finest. There is no need to mask a product with so much hype and flashy glamour where it loses what it truly is. Commercials have an awful tendency to set the scene a little too much rather than focus just on the product that is attempted to be sold. Tequila is a strong drink, so obviously trying to cover it with anything tends to wear down on its masculinity. Men are often the more prominent stronger alcohol drinkers, therefore, the commercial should strictly try to maintain this persona, which it clearly does. Not only is the message portrayed much clearer, but the money saved on making the commercial simple is a huge advantage. That is more money in the pocket for the company to use elsewhere.

  5. I think that this commercial was very successful at advertising their product. It is short and to the point. It is brief enough to captivate the viewers attention throughout the entire commercial and still display their product. I think that it was very creative and intelligent to make fun of other commercials that are lengthy and not relevant to the product being sold. There was very minimal movement throughout the commercial which drew my eyes to look at the bottle of 1800 Tequila. I think that this commercial is a perfect example of a great way to sell a product.

  6. This commercial is great. There's no ambiguity and it's obvious exactly what the commercial is advertising. The bottle stood out and there were no distractions taking away from the product. I agree with previous comments saying there is a huge advantage in the ad costing less. In the long run, the ad might be even more profitable than flashy commercials because the consumers actually know what they are being sold. I think this a great way to approach commercials and from a consumer's point of view, makes a lot more sense than flashy, garish commercials.

  7. I thought it was funny/ironic how this commercial was talking about how other commercials you can hardly tell the product they are trying to sell. We had that issue brought up in the blog. I really liked how this commercial was short and simple and got straight to the point. Had that man been talking for a long time given the scenery and tone, it would have been boring, but it was only a few seconds long, making the audience aware of their product. Since there wasn't a whole lot going on and it was so short, I agree with the other comments that this ad may have cost less. It saves the company money while getting straight to the point advertising their product.

  8. I believe that this commercial did do a very good job at getting the point across about its name. However, I feel like it had a more boring vibe. They did get their name out there and made it short and sweet, but compared to other liquor commercials that I have seen it is not as exciting. I would be more likely to buy the Smirnoff Vodka, for example, than this brand of liquor. They almost make more of a statement about what a good ad should be rather than stating why someone should buy their product. I feel that the most effective type of commercial would be one that is short and sweet, but also gets the customer excited about buying their product by using some creativity.

  9. I enjoyed the simplicity of the ad as well. The man points out exactly what he is trying to sell to the viewer, and to make the message more clear the bright blue bottle is sitting on the table in front of him. The fact that the background and his monotone voice was so boring, it had me looking directly at the bottle. When the camera pans into his face and he tries to be serious was kind of humorous. He says, "This is a commercial for tequila" the fact that it was so obvious made the commercial enjoyable.

I have to agree that this tactic with a small, easy, and short commercial would bring in more profit then a long, winded one. The 1800 tequila brand is probably more focused on improving their product as a whole then focusing on to make complicated ads. The company lets the product speak for its self. No flashing lights, crazy colors, or stunts. Just tequila. That's why I would buy this product.

  10. I really liked the bluntness of this ad. I have honestly never seen (that I can recall) an ad that just says what it is trying to sell. It was quick, easy, and straight to the point. It was also probably very cost effective as well. I like how it used the way other commercials advertise their products to their advantage...by doing the opposite. I thought the ad was good, now no one will have a problem trying to figure out what company is trying to advertise. The whole goal of advertising is to sell and market a specific product. That goal is very hard to achieve when no one can tell what in the world you are advertising for.

  11. I think 1800 did a great job with this commercial.Their simple, no "bs" approach grabs our attention fast and lets us know what they're selling. I also agree with an above comment about the commercial having a masculine vibe. 1800 isn't advertising a tequila that's meant for fun, upscale parties. It's advertising a tequila that you're going to drink with your buddies. While this may not appeal to all audiences, the important thing to note is that 1800 isn't trying to appeal to everyone. They're trying to get their product to a specific consumer. Most commercials this days seem more like their trying to entertain us instead of trying to sell to us. Quite frankly, it doesn't seem as successful as a method like this does. Great choice of commercial.

  12. I was unusually appealed to this ad for some reason. The commercials I'm commonly most appealed to contain comedy or other unique aspects that draw my attention. This particular commercial drew my attention probably because of its bluntness and opposition to the typical commercial. I think the commercial included everything it needed to in order to sell their product.

  13. I agree with the trend of the comments above. The commercial is refreshingly simple, there are no questions, and although the commercial really had nothing in it, it was original. This simplistic strategy is a great way to eliminate the reaction I am sure everyone has said once before following a failed commercial, "The idea was good but they did not do it very well." Although the simplicity was great, the most important aspect, in my opinion, was the originality. Originality is the one thing that is most important in a commercial. If it is not original the viewer spends the entire time watching the commercial thinking about or trying to figure out which product did that particular idea the first time.

  14. I found this commercial, actually, really amusing. It has a sort of dry sense of humor to it. I was short and to the point, and yes, it didn't need to be long. Although it was a commercial for tequila. Tequila is just tequila, and it's never going to be more complicated than that. There are, however, other products out there that sometimes need a little more explanation to capture a viewers attention, and thus a longer commercial. The longer commercials really don't bother me as long as there is a point and need for it.

  15. I agree with the comments above, its a good ad, short and to the point. It does not mess around with frills and fancy stuff. Another part of this ad that I enjoyed was who they used as their spokes person. Michael Imperioli, use to be in the hit tv series the Sopranos. In that show he acted like he does in the ad, very to the point. No beating around the bush. All of those factors come together to make this a very concise and effective ad.

  16. Yes I agree with all the above comments. I actually really liked this commercial. It stood out to me because it was different. It also took no thought to understand what they were promoting. I'm sure it was less expensive to create and to purchase the short amount of TV time and they got the same results as they would have with a long elaborate expensive commercial. Overall, I thought the simplicity was a great idea.

  17. This blog analyzed the commercial very well and had some very good points. In the introduction they gave a background of the tequila which helped me understand the background of the commercial. Although the blog was well written, I do not think that this was a very persuasive advertisement. Commercials have a high budget and are flashy for a reason. Americans want to see fun and exciting commercials instead of boring ones. Also, the commercial did not even advertise their tequila. They only said that they are selling tequila. Not once did they talk about the quality of the tequila or even how much it costs.
